Welcome to the Host Logic IT Blog for July 2017
This blog is part of a series designed to showcase our methods of providing total IT security to protect against modern-day nasties like ransomware. Today we are discussing step two: “Block It – Advanced Security” which focuses on workstation and server protection and how advanced security can help you avoid becoming a victim.
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that has been designed with one purpose: to extract money from its victims.

Avoid becoming a victim
Stopping ransomware requires effective advanced security to be in place before an attack happens. Host Logic partners with industry leaders Sophos to provide our clients with the most comprehensive IT security available. Our solutions provide multi-layer protection specifically designed to combat ransomware.
- Protecting your workstations
Sophos Intercept X utilizes the unique CryptoGuard technology to stop ransomware attacks in their tracks. It works by detecting and stopping ransomware from encrypting your files, including the recent WannaCry ransomware outbreak. Intercept X complements your existing security, blocking processes that attempt to make unauthorized modifications to your data.
- Stopping threats via the web
URL filtering blocks websites hosting ransomware, as well as their command and control servers. And, by enforcing strict controls you can stop ransomware-related files from being downloaded at all.
Cloud sandboxing blocks zero-day [what does this mean?] advanced threats, including ransomware. It’s like having your own private lab that runs suspicious file tests to determine behaviour in order to recognise a genuine threat when it occurs.
- Protecting your servers
Server whitelisting and lockdown keep your servers secure by “whitelisting” or authorising, applications and identifying what you allow them to change and update – all other attempts to make changes are automatically blocked, stopping ransomware from acting.Malicious traffic detection stops ransomware from contacting command and control servers and downloading their malicious files.
Sophos Server Protection also includes CryptoGuard technology that stops ransomware from encrypting your files.
